As many know, I have reduced my photography services to charitable volunteer events. This August Flashes of Hope sent me on assignment to a family cancer camp on Lake Michigan.
I always leave charity photo shoots with a full heart, but this time it was different. This time, I left a piece of my heart right there on the shores of Lake Michigan with a precious little baby girl we will call Baby W.
Baby W was born with cancer. At 22 months old, she has been in continual treatment since birth. A week before coming to camp with her family she hit a milestone -- for the first time in her life she was taken off all of her support tubes. It was a new freedom for not only her, but her family. When we walked down to the beach together, her mother started to tear up, explaining that her daughter had never felt sand between her toes. For Baby W's family, every first was a reason for celebration. That day Baby W, her mom, grandmother and I had a proper sand-between-our-toes celebration...
May God bless you Baby W, with each and every new first.
